In the early hours of 4 July, the MT Motivator reported it was under small arms fire from a pirate attack in the northern Bab Al Mandeb area in the southern Red Sea. After notification of this attack, attempts were made to make contact with the Motivator but to no avail. The hijack was confirmed early on 5 July.

The MT Motivator, deadweight 13,065 tonnes with a crew of 18 Filipino nationals on board, is a Marshall Islands Flagged chemical products tanker loaded with lubricants oil. EU NAVFOR is monitoring the situation.This is, to my best recollection, the first capture of a major ship in the Red Sea by Somali pirates.

Natasha Boyden: The negative sentiment in the dry bulk market was less focused on Capesize vessels last week, with the brunt of the fall in rates taken by Panamax and Handymax vessels. Capesizes activity was mixed, with a firm start to the week in both the Atlantic and Pacific helped to stabilize earnings, although the market sold-off as the week wore on. The weak Chinese steel market remains the source of the poor Capesize market currently, in our opinion, with steel and iron ore prices continuing to fall (see Exhibits 5 and 6). Capesize spot rates firmed about 10% week-over-week to $21,940 per vessel/day. The Panamax sector was in freefall as a major source of demand, the South American grain season, is now coming to an end. While coal cargoes in the Pacific remain robust, the amount of available vessels is overwhelming demand due to so few cargoes out of South America taking tonnage out of the market, we suggest. Furthermore, with spot levels so low, charter period has been slow as owners balk at current rates. In our opinion, this weakness could persist until the U.S. grain season picks up in the Fall.

Hammonia has been renamed Hellespont Ship Management GmbH & Co KG and is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Hellespont Group parent company, which has been renamed Hellespont Deutschland GmbH.

“By buying out our partners we become a little more nimble and ready to move swiftly to take up opportunities that the global recovery may present,” said Phrixos Papachristidis, Hellespont Group chief executive. “As we are currently predominantly a tanker owner we have not been as hard hit as some in the German shipping community, which had such a strong containership focus, and we are poised for growth.”

Hellespont first moved into the German market in 2004 and Hamburg, according to Mr Papachristidis, has shown itself to be an excellent base from which to operate a high quality global shipping group. “We expect to grow further here as the recovery strengthens and opportunities arise,” he said.

In addition to activities in Hamburg, the group manages vessels from Piraeus and Singapore and has a crewing company in Manila.   The MT Motivator, deadweight 13,065 tonnes with a crew of 18 Filipino nationals on board, is a Marshall Islands Flagged chemical products tanker loaded with lubricants oil. EU NAVFOR is monitoring the situation.This is, to my best recollection, the first capture of a major ship in the Red Sea by Somali pirates.

In the highly competitive shipping market, many airlines prefer to cover the losses of their resources rather than report the incident, causing a sharp increase in insurance premiums and risk of longdelays because of the government’s investigation and paperwork.

  AFRICA
  
  LATIN AMERICA
  
  The four common denominators which factor in all three areas:
  
  - Diversity of islands and archipelagos, chains, facilitating location hides many (not Africa)
  
  - The widespread government corruption
  
  - Lack of cooperation with the general population surveys for fear of criminal victimization
  
  - Corporate andhealthy black market in order to facilitate quick and easy sale of stolen goods
  
  Players are mainly affected are the shippers (manufacturers that sold stolen goods), carrier (the company that owns the ship stolen sea), and insurer of shippers and carriers.
  
  Encouraged piracy acts have increased in volume sufficient to International Maritime Bureau (IMB), founded by the Chamber of Commerce (ICC), sends daily reportspirating satellite to all shipping companies.
  
  The international community is driving stem piracy at sea much more aggressive on many fronts from ICC / IMB seminars sponsored recruit private military companies (PMC), the shipping companies.
  
  Recent major events concerning the increasing threat of international trade Blackwater Worldwide (PMC), which offers its 830-tonne, 183-foot vessel “MacArthur” for the Somali government tohelp fight the pirates that plague the east coast of Africa and also send two warships from China to patrol the waters infested with pirates.
  
  Both events were met with mixed feelings of high international community.
  
  The conclusion is that companies find it difficult enough to maintain a sustainable long-term success in today’s global economy not to feel that the possibility of diversion of their products on the high seas toallowed to continue to endanger their safety.
  
  We expect to see much more activity on this relationship and how escalation and hijackings increase tensions with the corridors activities and powers of government.

Overall, your impression of Fast Ships, Black Sails will depend on your expectations. If you’re looking for unconventional literary stories, this isn’t the place to find them. If you want pirates and adventure, go grab this anthology.   For all of you who know me, my sincere apologies for not being around as of late. And for those in which I have not met and had a chance to personally greet… “welcome to the Z.” :mat:
  
  The last several months have been a whirlwind at sea. High tides, low tides, but in the end, a couple of Pirates with many blessings.
  
  Our world has been consumed with getting my daughter moved to Texas as they were expecting a baby girl today, July 5th. As a parent, you can probably imagine what goes in to getting them moved here, arranging housing, helping the daddy find a job and then moving them into an apartment so they could finally have a chance to do it right for their upcoming “family.”
  
  End result, Randi, my daughter gave birth to a baby girl on Wednesday, June 30th. Rilye Marie was born at 7:15pm, weighed 7 lbs and 4 ounces and was 20 inches long.
  
  Randi is at home for a bit resting today, little Rilye is still in NICU… please keep them in your prayers.
  
  Thought I’d share a couple of pictures with yall and explain why the Pirates had vanished at sea for a bit.
  
  The above picture was taken when she was only 30 minutes old… previous to all the tubes they had to stick down her throat and nose.
  
  I know I’m not being bias… as I am not one that thinks all babies are pretty… lol but I think this one is!
  
  Hope everyone is having a great 4th weekend, our ship has been sailing to and from the hospital for daaaayyyysss now!

Even as the UAE gears up to ban all single-hull tankers by the end of the year, their number has decreased drastically while demand from countries with inland transportation has increased. The number of single-hulls in the market has dropped to almost seven per cent of the total fleet and 2010 would be the right time to scrap the ships, according to a recent report published by McQuilling Services.The phase-out of single-hulled vessels has been pushed forward by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) after the Prestige and Erika oil spills. The regulation requires tanker owners from IMO-member states to stop operating single-hull vessels by the end of 2010, while vessels built with a double bottom and single sides can continue trading until 2015.The IMO’s regulation 13G calls for single-hulled tankers to be phased out in 2010 by the anniversary dates of their delivery. However, an amendment, regulation 13G(7), allows these same vessels the opportunity to trade to 2015, but only after the successful completion of a Condition Assessment Scheme (CAS) which is applicable to all single-hulls of 15 years or older.Even with successful CAS certificates in place, the IMO 13G(8) regulation grants flag states their own rights for controlling access. “In many cases, major tanker ports around the globe have already indicated that 2010 will be the final year in which they will allow single-hulls to call at their ports, regardless of a vessel’s CAS status,” said the McQuilling report.In a recent notice issued to agents and bunkering officials, Capt Tamer Masoud, Harbour Master at Fujairah Port, said: “Single-hull tankers that are still not phased out, are permitted for cargo operation, subject to submission of documents as per our Notice to Mariner No 84.” Notice 84 states that in order to accept single-hull tankers at the Port of Fujairah, it is essential for the vessel to have satisfactory results from the CAS for single-hull tankers of age 15 and more, and to obtain necessary permission from the flag state for continued operation of single-hull tankers.The latest notice adds phased-out single-hull tankers are allowed to call at the Fujairah Offshore Anchorage Area in ballast condition to receive primary requirements and should leave the area immediately on completion of aforesaid services. Phased-out, single-hull tankers are, however, not allowed to wait for orders.However, the UAE has already made its stand clear that no single-hull vessels will be allowed into any of the country’s ports after 2010. Emirates Business has published, way back in 2008, statements from Badreya Ahmed Al Dhahri, Director of the Marine Affairs Department at the National Transport Authority (NTA), as saying: “We are streamlining our regulations and have made it clear that no single-hull tankers will be allowed to trade in the UAE after the 2010 deadline.”Bloomberg quoted Harbour Master Masoud in November 2009, saying: “Our policy is clear. The report said current market conditions were not that bad for companies wanting to scrap their ships. “If it is time to go, perhaps now isn’t the worst time to scrap a ship.” Demo prices for tanker tonnage have risen rather steadily since 2009 after dropping to $250 (Dh918) per light displacement tonnage (LDT).”The market is seeing a new high point for 2010, with China paying $435/LDT in May for the VLCC Shinyo Mariner. Average scrap prices of $413/LDT this year are up by 49 per cent compared with $278/LDT seen during the same period in 2009. For a typical VLCC, today’s scrap price leaves a parting owner with more than $14 million. This is hardly a figure to ignore in the face of surmounting difficulties for continued trade of a single-hull,” it said.It said Bangladesh remained the most popular buyer of wet tonnage, taking 56 per cent of tankers scrapped this year at $408/LDT on average. India and Pakistan make up the gross majority of other breakers collecting tonnage, with Chinese yards expanding their participation in the demo markets as of late.”It is interesting to note the high price being offered by Chinese breakers this season, who typically quote among the lowest of scrap rates. This is not the first time that China has offered premium prices on scrap, and it will probably not be the last. Typically, these price-cycles fall back down once China’s prompt demand for scrap steel has been appeased,” it added.With only 36 VLCCs left in the single-hulled fleet – 63 per cent less than just an year ago – the industry, the report said, may have already seen a drastic change in the way charter rates are negotiated.”Though this list is thinning, there have always been charterers willing to accept the risk of fixing a single-hulled ship, albeit at some discount to more modern, double-hulled vessels. And with singles losing both their volume and trade-ability, owners of newer tonnage may be more at ease knowing that charterers are losing the discounted option,” it said.As for the remaining single-hulls, the report said: “Some will trudge ahead, paying for dry docking repairs and CAS expenditures before the year is up. In fact, one could argue that the last few singles floating should do quite well given the scarcity of their kind. But many will opt not to take on these expenses, particularly as today’s single-hulls face 40 per cent fleet utilisation and discounted freight rates at that.”

Here’s a new video about the Maltese islands and the various wrecks and caves. Some of the wrecks featured: Um El Faroud (Oil Tanker, 120m long), MV Karwela (Passenger Ferry, 50m long) and the HMS Stubborn (British S Class Submarine, 66m long). Unfortantely we could not do all the dives we planned due to strong winds (for instance the Tuna farms) but we had a great time and the last dive on the Stubborn was amazing!

Choppy seas have temporarily foiled attempts to see if a giant oil skimmer can be a silver bullet for cleanup efforts in a Gulf of Mexico.

Bob Grantham, spokesman for Taiwanese shipping firm TMT, says a company’s vessel, dubbed “A Whale,” will need furar testing off a coast of Louisiana.

Grantham said in an e-mail Monday that conditions in a Gulf over a weekend were too choppy to get definitive answers on a vessel’s cDrunk Newsability.

Billed as a world’s largest oil skimmer, “A Whale” is supposed to be able to suck up 21 million gallons of oily water per day.

Grantham says testing will resume as soon as a water is calmer.

Cloudy skies cast a pall over South Florida beaches & rough seas hampered clean-up efforts in a Gulf — even as crews were hoping a massive new skimmer would get a government green-light to join a fight against a growing oil spill.

The polyaromatic hydrocarbons contained in the spilled oil poisoned plankton, fish eggs, and crustaceans and caused carcinogenic effects in fish and animals. The fishing industry also suffered heavy losses as offshore fishing had to be put on hold for the next 6 months.

As part of the massive oil spill cleanup efforts, underwater oil spill containment operations were carried out. First the leakage was reduced to 20 liters a day by sealing the cracks in the hull. Later the oil was pumped into aluminum shuttles by drilling small holes in the wreck.

Oil Gone Easy S-200, an eco-friendly product was used to clean up the beaches that were affected by the Prestige oil spill. This product uses the bioremediation process to help convert polluting hydrocarbons into harmless byproducts using the microorganisms present in the environment, thus cleaning up the oil spill in an environmentally-friendly way.

The field survey on the use of S-200 in Cantabrian coast in northern Spain by the Department of Microbiology, University of Barcelona revealed that S-200 had increased the biodegradation rate of high molecular weight hydrocarbons like benzenes. Surprisingly, there was a significant reduction of harmful diasteranes and C-27 sterane components.

The pollution caused by the Prestige oil spill will continue to affect marine population in the coming decade. The main cause of oil spills is human apathy and negligence. As it causes severe damage to the ecosystem everyone should take due care to protect Mother Nature.

Two Dutch companies are on stand-by to help the Americans tackle an oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico. The two companies use huge booms to sweep and suck the oil from the surface of the sea. The US authorities, however, have difficulties with the method they use.

What do the Dutch have that the Americans don’t when it comes to tackling oil spills at sea? “Skimmers,” answers Wierd Koops, chairman of the Dutch organisation for combating oil spills, Spill Response Group Holland.

The Americans don’t have spill response vessels with skimmers because their environment regulations do not allow it. With the Dutch method seawater is sucked up with the oil by the skimmer. The oil is stored in the tanker and the superfluous water is pumped overboard. But the water does contain some oil residue, and that is too much according to US environment regulations.[media:factfile1]

US regulations contradictory

Wierd Koops thinks the US approach is nonsense, because otherwise you would have to store the surplus seawater in the tanks as well.

“We say no, you have to get as much oil as possible into the storage tanks and as little water as possible. So we pump the water, which contains drops of oil, back overboard.”

US regulations are contradictory, Mr Knoops stresses. Pumping water back into the sea with oil residue is not allowed. But you are allowed to combat the spill with chemicals so that the oil dissolves in the seawater. In both cases, the dissolved oil is naturally broken down quite quickly.

It is possible the Americans will opt for the Dutch method as the damage the oil spill could cause to the mud flats and salt marshes along the coast is much worse, warns Wetland expert Hans Revier.

“You have to make sure you clear up the oil at sea. As soon as the oil reaches the mud flats and salt marshes, it is too late. The only thing you can do then is dig it up. But then the solution is worse than the problem.”

Wadden Sea experiments

Hans Revier, lector in Marine Wetland Studies at the Stenden College in Leeuwarden, recollects experiments in the Dutch Wadden Sea wetlands. When combined oil and gas pipelines were to be laid in the area, experiments to combat potential oil spills were held.

“It turned out that dissolving the oil with chemicals caused more damage than the oil itself. And burning the oil didn’t help either. That leaves just one solution: to allow nature to take its course. It took almost ten years for the oil to break down naturally from the tanker Amoco Cadiz which stranded off the French coast in 1978 and for the environment to recover.”

That leaves the Americans no alternative. If they want to save the mud flats and salt marshes along the coast they will have to adopt the Dutch method. It can be done very quickly, because only the oil skimmers need to be flown across the Atlantic and placed on local tankers, explains Mr Koops.

Senator convinced

A team of around eight men are on stand-by and four skimmers and extra material are ready to be loaded. The local senator is already convinced and is trying to talk the admiral who is coordinating the operation into accepting help from the Netherlands. The answer may be given today.

But nothing is certain. In 1989, a Dutch team and equipment had already been flown in to tackle the Exxon Valdez oil tanker disaster off the coast of Alaska. But in the end the US authorities sent them home. – Radio Netherlands Worldwide (H/T Kermit)

We now have oil tankers with dual hulls but they don’t make all of them have it because too much money. The oil also weighs the birds down to where Penguins can’t swim and sea birds can’t fly and as a result, they drown or freeze to death since it is currently winter in the Southern hemisphere. As of yet, the ship responsible for the spill has not been identified.

July 3, 2010- At 16:03 the SHFD was dispatched to “The Island” (Fritz Reed Avenue) for a brush fire. Chief 720 (Peel) arrived on scene and found a small fire near the playground and had all incoming units come in under caution and cancelled off apparatus that hadn’t gone responding. Engine 732, Tanker 738 and Chief 720 remained on scene for about 10 minutes before going available.
